Appalachian Community Histories – Berwind, McDowell County: Company Mines, Coal Camp Life, and the Community Along Dry Fork
Berwind sits deep in southern McDowell County, where rows of houses follow the narrow ground between the Tug Fork and steep, wooded mountains. The community may appear isolated today, but during the opening decades of the twentieth century it belonged to an industrial network that stretched from the coal seams beneath McDowell County to railroad terminals, steel mills, financial offices, and corporate boardrooms far beyond West Virginia.
The town was not built gradually around an old crossroads or farming settlement. Berwind was created to serve coal. Its houses, streets, pedestrian paths, company buildings, railroad connections, and numbered mines were arranged around the needs of the New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Company.
A statewide coal heritage survey dates the establishment of Berwind to 1905. State mining records confirm that Berwind No. 1 was active by 1907, and within a few years the settlement had become the center of a large and increasingly mechanized group of mining operations.
What remains at Berwind is more than a collection of aging company houses. The community preserves the physical outline of a time when a single coal corporation could provide employment, housing, stores, social institutions, transportation, and medical accommodations while also controlling much of the land beneath and around the town.
A Town Built for a Coal Company
The Coal Heritage Survey Update for McDowell County states that Berwind was established in 1905 by the New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Company. The company was connected to the larger Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, a powerful Pennsylvania coal business founded by the Berwind family in 1886.
The settlement carried the Berwind name into the southern West Virginia coalfields. Although the company operating the local mines was formally known as New River and Pocahontas Consolidated, it belonged to a much larger corporate organization. The National Park Service identifies the company as a branch of Berwind-White and records that it operated mines in several parts of West Virginia, including Kaymoor, Minden, Layland, and Leslie in the New River Gorge.
Berwind was therefore not an isolated local investment. It was one piece of a coal empire that owned mines, company towns, transportation equipment, property, and industrial facilities across multiple coalfields. The present Berwind Corporation continues to trace its institutional history to 1886, though the modern company has long since moved beyond direct coal production.
The distance between Berwind and the company’s financial leadership can be seen in the 1911 West Virginia mine report. While the company listed Berwind as its West Virginia address, its general office was located in the Arcade Building in Philadelphia. Decisions affecting miners and their families in McDowell County were therefore connected to managers, investors, and administrators hundreds of miles away.
The First Years of Mining
The earliest state records reveal that mining was firmly underway at Berwind by 1907.
On October 19 of that year, J. C. Leach was moving a mining machine at Berwind No. 1 when his clothing became caught in its sprocket. He was taken to a hospital in Welch, where he died three days later. The accident report identifies him as an American worker.
Less than three weeks later, on November 7, James Cocus was pushing a mine car into a room at Berwind No. 1 when the car left the track and struck a roof support. Falling slate trapped and killed him. The state report identified Cocus as Hungarian.
These reports offer some of the earliest direct evidence of activity at Berwind. They also show that mechanized mining equipment, underground rail cars, immigrant labor, and access to a regional hospital were already part of the operation within a few years of the town’s reported establishment.
A postcard photograph preserved by the West Virginia and Regional History Center shows the large Steele Tipple at Berwind around 1909. The structure rose above the railroad tracks and served as the industrial gateway between the underground mines and the outside market. Coal brought from the workings was sorted, processed, and loaded into railroad cars for shipment.
The image captures the scale of the investment at Berwind. This was no small wagon mine supplying nearby households. By the end of the decade, the company had constructed the equipment necessary to move enormous quantities of coal from the mountain and into the national transportation system.
Berwind Nos. 1 Through 4
The 1911 annual report of the West Virginia Department of Mines provides one of the clearest surviving descriptions of Berwind’s early industrial system.
Berwind No. 1 worked the No. 3 Pocahontas coal seam. The mine was ventilated by an eighteen-foot Capell fan, and the state inspector described the operation as being in good condition. Uriah Lewis was listed as mine foreman, while H. M. Bertolet and William Barrick held senior management positions.
Berwind No. 2 was a drift mine, meaning that workers entered the coal seam through a horizontal or nearly horizontal opening driven into the mountainside. Its ventilation system reportedly moved approximately 130,000 cubic feet of air each minute. Concrete stoppings directed air through the workings, and its main entry contained double railroad tracks.
The inspector noted that Berwind No. 2 was the only mine in the district with a double-tracked main entry. The company had also installed a washery capable of handling 1,500 tons of machine cuttings each day. This combination of track, ventilation, machinery, and coal processing demonstrates how quickly Berwind developed into an advanced mining complex.
Berwind No. 3 was another drift operation in the No. 3 Pocahontas seam. The mine became particularly dry during winter, making coal dust a serious concern. According to the inspector, workers watered the mine during both day and night shifts to control the dust. The report also described the use of permissible explosives and certified mine officials.
Berwind No. 4 was still considered a new mine in 1911. It was located approximately two and one-half miles southeast of the community on a branch of the Norfolk and Western Railway. Conveyors carried coal about 760 feet from the drift opening to the tipple. A ten-foot fan supplied ventilation, while concrete stoppings and overcasts controlled the underground movement of air.
The numbered mines were not interchangeable openings in one hillside. Each had its own ventilation system, equipment, mine officials, underground conditions, and relationship to the railroad. Together, however, they formed the economic foundation of Berwind.
Expansion Into a Larger Mining District
Berwind’s industrial reach continued to grow.
By 1919, the West Virginia Department of Mines listed Berwind Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 under the New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Company. The same company directory included Havaco and Newhall Nos. 6, 7, and 8.
This collection of numbered mines shows that the company’s McDowell County operations had expanded beyond the immediate residential center at Berwind. Berwind functioned as a corporate and geographic anchor for a much wider network of mines, settlements, railroad sidings, and industrial facilities along the surrounding valleys.
The numbering system also reveals something important about coalfield geography. A mine bearing the Berwind name was not necessarily located directly beneath the center of town. Openings could be several miles away, connected by branch railroads, haulage systems, conveyors, and company roads.
This distinction is particularly important when examining later accidents. On August 6, 1948, six miners were killed by a roof fall at Berwind No. 11. The official state disaster list places that mine at Capels rather than within the Berwind settlement. The disaster belongs to the history of the company’s broader mining system, but the mine name should not be mistaken for proof that the accident happened inside the town of Berwind.
A Planned Company Town
Coal companies did more than open mines. They constructed communities designed to house and manage the workforce required to operate them.
At Berwind, the company provided a store, bank, post office, clubhouse, two churches, and several forms of employee housing. These institutions gave residents access to goods, communication, recreation, worship, and financial services, but they also concentrated much of daily life within property controlled or influenced by the company.
The surviving layout shows how deliberately the town was organized. The Coal Heritage Survey describes rows of residences placed with their backs along parallel streets. The fronts of the houses faced pedestrian lanes bordered by yards, stone walls, and fencing.
This arrangement created two sides to domestic life. The street side allowed access for deliveries, maintenance, and transportation. The pedestrian side provided a more social face, where neighbors could walk between houses without depending entirely on the roadway.
Typical miners’ houses were two-story frame buildings with gabled roofs and one-story shed-roof extensions. Repetition made construction quicker and less expensive while giving the town a recognizable architectural pattern.
The houses were not all the same. Supervisors, doctors, and other residents of higher professional or company status occupied larger frame or brick residences. The architecture made the occupational hierarchy of the coal company visible. A person’s position within the mining organization could influence not only wages and authority, but also the size, materials, and location of the family home.
One of the most impressive surviving examples was the company doctor’s residence. A government survey photograph shows a substantial two-story dwelling with a broad porch and prominent columns. Its size and appearance differed noticeably from the standardized houses provided to miners.
Behind the miners’ residences stood smaller wooden wash houses. These buildings gave workers a place to remove coal dust and wash before entering the family home. Their presence reflected the daily reality of underground labor. Coal dust did not remain at the mine portal. Without a separate place to clean, it followed the worker into kitchens, bedrooms, clothing, and household water.
Life Between the Mine and the House
For the families living at Berwind, the boundary between employment and private life was thin.
A miner could leave a company house, walk through a company-designed town, pass company institutions, and report to a mine owned by the same corporation that controlled the property beneath his home. His neighbors might include miners, drivers, machine operators, track workers, foremen, clerks, store employees, railroad workers, and professional staff.
The company store and bank provided convenience in a geographically isolated place. The churches and clubhouse created spaces where residents could gather outside the mine. Yet the concentration of services also meant that a family’s housing and access to much of the community remained closely connected to continued employment.
Berwind should not be remembered only as a corporate design. Families transformed company housing into homes. Children grew up along the pedestrian lanes. Residents worshipped, visited neighbors, married, mourned, traded goods, and created relationships that lasted beyond the company’s ownership.
Small notices in regional newspapers show that by 1910 Berwind was already functioning as a settled community rather than merely a collection of mine buildings. Newspapers recorded visits between Berwind and nearby communities and mentioned couples returning to make their homes there. Such notices rarely appear in corporate histories, but they reveal the network of family and friendship that existed beside the industrial operation.
Workers From Different Backgrounds
The mine accident reports provide brief but important evidence about the people who worked at Berwind.
J. C. Leach was identified as American. James Cocus was recorded as Hungarian. Peter Toney, who died at Berwind No. 2 on December 31, 1914, was identified as Italian. Toney was drawing pillars when a section of slate fell upon him.
These labels were written by state officials and cannot tell the complete stories of the men or their families. They do, however, show that Berwind participated in the broader migration patterns that transformed the southern West Virginia coalfields.
Mining companies recruited workers from within Appalachia, from other parts of the United States, and from European immigrant communities. Men who may have spoken different languages or practiced different customs entered the same mountains and faced many of the same dangers underground.
The accident records are clinical documents. They list dates, occupations, nationalities, mine names, and causes of death. Yet behind each entry was a household that lost a wage earner, husband, father, son, brother, or neighbor.
Leach’s death involved machinery. Cocus died after a derailed car displaced a roof support. Toney was killed by falling slate during pillar work. Together, their deaths demonstrate that danger came from many directions. Machines, track systems, unstable roofs, explosives, dust, gas, and the physical pressure of the mountain were all part of the working environment.
Technology and Danger Beneath the Mountain
The state mine reports often praised ventilation systems, concrete stoppings, certified foremen, safety supplies, and compliance with mining law. Berwind’s mines possessed substantial technology for the period, but modernization did not eliminate danger.
Mechanization could increase production while introducing new hazards. Electric mining machines cut coal more quickly than hand tools, but they contained moving chains, gears, cables, and sprockets. Underground rail systems carried more coal, but a derailed car could strike a worker or remove the timbers supporting the roof.
The process of drawing pillars was especially hazardous. Miners recovered coal left in place to help support previously worked sections of the mine. As those pillars were removed, the roof was expected to collapse behind the workers. A mistake in timing, an unexpected fracture, or a piece of loose slate could prove fatal.
Ventilation was equally important. Fans, doors, stoppings, and overcasts controlled the movement of air, carried gases away from the working faces, and supplied miners with breathable air. At Berwind No. 3, the inspector’s concern about winter dust shows that even a well-ventilated mine required constant attention.
The descriptions contained in the 1911 report reveal both the ambition and the vulnerability of the Berwind operation. The company installed fans, conveyors, double tracks, a washery, electrical equipment, and concrete air-control structures. Every improvement increased the mine’s productive capacity, but every additional machine and underground passage required workers to maintain it.
Berwind Within the Berwind-White Empire
The history of Berwind cannot be separated from the expansion of the Berwind-White organization.
The company had begun in Pennsylvania before moving into the coalfields of West Virginia. Through New River and Pocahontas Consolidated, it acquired or operated mines in more than one West Virginia coalfield. The National Park Service records that the company purchased major operations in the New River Gorge, including the Minden property in 1904 and the Kaymoor properties in 1925.
Coal from these operations entered different railroad systems and markets, but management, ownership, and investment linked them together. The company could shift capital, equipment, and expertise between properties while selling coal to customers far removed from the communities where it was mined.
Berwind’s place within that organization explains the sophistication of its facilities. The town was backed by a corporation capable of financing multiple mine openings, railroad branches, conveyors, ventilation systems, coal-processing equipment, company housing, and community institutions.
It also explains why local history can be found in distant archives. Records concerning Berwind may appear in Philadelphia business files, Pennsylvania coal collections, Norfolk and Western Railway archives, federal court cases, Virginia Tech’s Pocahontas Mines Collection, state geological records, and manuscript collections associated with the Berwind family.
The town was local, but the system governing it was regional and national.
The Decline of the Original Mining Operation
Berwind’s economy remained tied to coal for more than half a century.
The McDowell County Coal Heritage Survey reports that the operation was purchased by the Pocahontas Fuel Company in 1961. The mines closed in 1967, ending the period during which the original company-town system defined the community’s economy.
The closing did not erase Berwind, but it weakened the institution around which the town had been designed. The company buildings, railroad facilities, tipple, mine portals, houses, churches, paths, and services had once functioned as pieces of a single industrial landscape. As mining ended, those pieces were separated from their original purpose.
Some structures disappeared. Industrial land was reclaimed or became overgrown. Houses were altered to meet the needs of later owners and residents. Company institutions closed, changed uses, or were demolished.
The people who remained had to build a community beyond the corporation that had created it.
This was one of the defining challenges faced by coal towns across Appalachia. A company could construct a settlement quickly when the coal was profitable. When operations ended, residents inherited the roads, buildings, environmental problems, and economic uncertainty that remained.
What Survives at Berwind
Despite decades of change, Berwind retains an unusually recognizable company-town landscape.
The statewide heritage survey recommended the creation of a Berwind Historic District with a period of significance extending from 1905 through 1967. The proposed district contained sixty-two contributing resources and was considered significant for its association with the coal industry and its company-town architecture.
The rows of standardized houses remain among the most important features. Seen together, they reveal the planned character of the settlement more clearly than any single residence could.
The relationship between roads, pedestrian lanes, yards, houses, river, railroad corridor, and mountains allows visitors to understand why the town developed as it did. Berwind could not spread across broad, level land. Its designers had to fit industrial and residential structures into the narrow valley floor while maintaining access to mine openings and transportation.
The surviving professional residences add another layer to the story. Their larger scale preserves evidence of the social and occupational hierarchy built into the town. The wash houses and modest miners’ dwellings reveal the daily experience of laboring families, while the doctor’s residence reflects the position granted to professional employees.
Preservation is especially important because coalfield architecture is disappearing rapidly. The McDowell County survey estimated that between one-quarter and two-fifths of the resources recorded during an earlier 1991 survey had been demolished by the time of the update. Company stores, offices, clubhouses, mine structures, and houses were among the most threatened resources.
Why Berwind Matters
Berwind matters because it preserves the history of coal as both an industry and a way of organizing human life.
The numbered mines reveal the technology, danger, and enormous investment required to extract the No. 3 Pocahontas seam. The company houses show how corporations arranged workers and families within the limited geography of the mountains. The larger professional residences reveal social divisions that were written directly into the architecture.
The accident reports restore names to some of the men who entered the mines. J. C. Leach, James Cocus, and Peter Toney were not simply labor statistics. Their deaths remind us that every ton of coal shipped from Berwind depended upon individuals working around machinery, moving rail cars, cutting pillars, controlling ventilation, and trusting the mountain roof above them.
The company store, bank, churches, clubhouse, post office, wash houses, pedestrian lanes, and family residences show that a coal town was never only a workplace. It was a constructed community where employment, domestic life, social relationships, and corporate authority existed side by side.
Berwind also matters because it survived.
Many Appalachian coal camps vanished after their mines closed. Some were dismantled by their owners. Others lost their houses to fire, flooding, abandonment, highway construction, or reclamation. Berwind remains an inhabited place where the outlines of the company town can still be read upon the landscape.
Its history belongs to the miners who entered Berwind Nos. 1 through 5, but it also belongs to the women who kept households running beneath the coal dust, the children who grew up along the pedestrian lanes, the immigrant families who made homes in McDowell County, and the residents who remained after the company left.
To understand Berwind is to understand how distant corporations and local families together created the communities of the southern West Virginia coalfields. The mines supplied the original purpose, but the people made the town.
