Appalachian Community Histories – Beech Grove, Anderson County: Black Diamond Coal, Mine Camp Life, and the Coal Creek Valley
A few miles northwest of old Coal Creek, now Rocky Top, the road into Beech Grove follows a landscape shaped by more than a century of coal mining. The mountains rise quickly around the narrow valleys, and the names scattered across the countryside still hint at the industrial world that once occupied them. Mine openings disappeared into Vowell Mountain. Railroad tracks carried coal toward Knoxville. Rows of houses gathered near company buildings, churches, a commissary, and the workings where generations of men earned their living underground.
Today Beech Grove is easy to overlook beside better-known Anderson County mining communities such as Briceville, Fraterville, and Coal Creek. Yet government mining reports, court records, geological studies, oral histories, and federal accident investigations reveal a community whose history stretches from the first great expansion of the Coal Creek coalfield in the nineteenth century into the final decades of twentieth-century mining.
Even the community’s name carries traces of that past. Geographic records based on the United States Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System identify Beech Grove as an Anderson County inhabited place and preserve “Better Chance” as another name associated with the settlement. The alternate name survives in the modern landscape around Better Chance Lane, but Beech Grove became the name most closely connected with the mines, families, and coal camp that developed there.
Its story is ultimately the story of an Appalachian community built around coal, transformed repeatedly by changes in mining technology, and sustained by families who created a social world far beyond the mouth of the mine.
Coal Creek Opens to Industrial Mining
Long before Beech Grove became a recognizable coal camp, the Coal Creek Valley was being transformed by railroad construction and industrial demand.
The National Register documentation for the Fraterville Miners’ Circle Cemetery describes the historic Coal Creek mining landscape as extending along Coal Creek, Laurel Fork, and Beech Grove Fork. It identifies Coal Creek, Briceville, Fraterville, the Wye, and Beech Grove among the important mining communities that developed in the valley.
Commercial mining accelerated after the Civil War. Henry Wiley helped complete the railroad connection between Knoxville and Coal Creek in 1869, providing the transportation system necessary to move large amounts of Anderson County coal to industrial customers. Wiley and William S. McEwen soon organized the Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing Company, which controlled substantial coal lands and leased portions of them to mining operators.
By the 1870s and 1880s, companies were pushing outward from Coal Creek toward Briceville in one direction and Beech Grove in another. The National Register documentation identifies companies including Knoxville Iron Company, East Tennessee Coal Company, Coal Creek Coal Company, and Black Diamond Coal Company as part of this expansion. By 1880, the Coal Creek area was reportedly producing roughly 200,000 tons of coal annually.
Beech Grove emerged within this industrial landscape.
The Black Diamond name appears particularly often in the surviving records. An 1885 Knoxville city directory listed a Black Diamond Coal Company with offices on Gay Street and stated that it had been incorporated in September 1874. The same directory listed the Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing Company, incorporated in 1872, from the same address.
Corporate arrangements changed over time. A later federal court case, Petree v. United States, recorded that a Black Diamond Coal Company was organized under New Jersey law in 1896 and shortly afterward leased Tennessee coal lands from the Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing Company. The earlier Knoxville records make clear that the Black Diamond name was already associated with the district before that 1896 corporation appeared. Rather than representing one simple, uninterrupted company history, the records suggest a changing series of corporate arrangements surrounding the coal properties.
What mattered to the families living along Beech Grove Fork was simpler. Coal companies were opening mines, laying tracks, building structures, and creating work.
Black Diamond Comes to Beech Grove
State mining reports from the 1890s give some of the earliest detailed glimpses of this industrial world.
The Tennessee Bureau of Labor and Mining Statistics devoted a substantial section of its 1894 Annual Report of the Commissioner of Labor and Inspector of Mines to Black Diamond Coal Company. The state’s mine inspectors recorded the machinery, ventilation, labor practices, conditions underground, and production of mines throughout the Coal Creek district. Black Diamond again received extensive attention in the 1896 volume.
An even more direct reference appeared in the July 11, 1896, issue of The Engineering and Mining Journal. The trade journal reported that Black Diamond Coal Company had installed a large coal-hauling engine and an electric plant at its Beech Grove mine in Anderson County. The company was also constructing a tipple.
That short notice captures an important moment in Beech Grove’s development. Mining was already moving beyond men working with little more than picks, shovels, animals, and muscle. Engines, electricity, tipples, and increasingly complicated transportation systems were turning Appalachian mines into industrial operations capable of moving far greater quantities of coal.
The geography helped explain why Beech Grove developed where it did. The United States Geological Survey’s 1896 Briceville folio documented the geology of the surrounding region just as commercial mining was accelerating. Mountain ridges contained workable coal seams, while streams and narrow valleys offered corridors through which rail lines, tramways, roads, and communities could be threaded.
A settlement followed the mine because a mine required people.
Miners needed houses. Families needed churches and places to buy food. Companies needed offices, storage buildings, power facilities, repair shops, mule barns, and transportation. Children needed schools. By the early twentieth century, Beech Grove had grown into something much larger than an isolated collection of mine openings.
It had become a coal community.
Life in the Beech Grove Mine Camp
Official reports can tell us how much coal a mine produced or how much air moved through an underground entry, but they rarely describe what it felt like to grow up beside one.
For that, one of the most valuable surviving accounts comes from William “Bill” McGhee, whose memories of Beech Grove were later preserved in Coal Mining Towns and reproduced in regional historical collections.
McGhee was born at Coal Creek in 1916. His family moved to Beech Grove the following year, when his father, Joseph Marion McGhee, was working as a coal miner.
His recollections describe a community organized around the rhythms of the mines.
Mules once hauled coal underground, requiring mule drivers, handlers, and a large barn. McGhee remembered Cal Andrews tending a mule barn capable of holding a substantial number of animals. Across the creek from the superintendent’s house stood a powerhouse where boilers generated steam and electricity for the mining operation.
Technology gradually changed that world. Battery-powered motors began replacing mules. A battery-charging facility operated for a time before being destroyed by fire. Commercial electricity eventually reached the community, and electric motors using trolley wires entered the mines. Coal-cutting machines increasingly performed work once done by miners swinging picks into the seam.
McGhee also remembered a distinctly local mining vocabulary. A wooden device called a “sprag” could be jammed into the spokes of a coal-car wheel to keep the car from rolling uncontrollably and injuring the mules.
His childhood memories were filled with light.
Before daylight, he could watch miners leaving for work, their carbide lamps appearing against Walden Ridge, Vowell Mountain, and the surrounding Cumberland Mountains. The lights marked men traveling toward separate mine openings from communities scattered across the valley.
Beech Grove had at least two workings remembered prominently in McGhee’s account. The older Number One Mine extended beneath Vowell Mountain. Another operation, remembered as the Klondike Mine, encountered persistent water problems. Engineers attempted to stop the water by filling openings with concrete, but McGhee remembered that the effort ultimately failed and the mine was abandoned.
Those details preserve the dangerous intimacy between geology and everyday life. A seam could provide decades of employment, while gas, water, unstable roof, or changing markets could end an operation with little warning.
A Community Beyond the Mine Portal
Beech Grove was not merely a place where men descended underground each morning.
According to McGhee’s recollections, the mine camp included a large commissary managed by Wade Mitchell, a movie theater and game room, a baseball team, a brass band, a small park, and a two-story hotel with a large dining room.
Those institutions reveal something easily lost when old coal communities are described simply as “company towns.” The company might have supplied buildings and employment, but residents created the community inside them.
People watched movies, played baseball, attended church, visited neighbors, raised children, worked gardens, and gathered on porches. Miners returned from underground and then worked small plots of land to supplement what wages could provide.
McGhee remembered that when mine work slowed during the 1920s, his father cultivated several acres in a nearby hollow. After a shift underground, Joseph McGhee could return home for supper and then continue working his fields by carbide light late into the evening.
The family’s table included meat, vegetables, syrup, and fruit produced through that combination of wage labor and small-scale agriculture. Coal might have supplied the paycheck, but mountain farming continued to provide a measure of independence.
Religion also anchored community life. Joseph McGhee served as a church deacon, and his son remembered Sundays when preachers and deacons gathered with their Bibles while families visited one another. Church functioned not simply as a place of worship but as one of the central institutions binding the community together.
McGhee’s account is a retrospective memory rather than an official census or company report, and individual details should be treated accordingly. Yet that is also its great value. Government documents recorded coal. McGhee recorded Beech Grove.
The Shadow of Fraterville
Beech Grove’s history was closely connected with the other communities of the Coal Creek Valley, and nowhere is that connection more visible than in the aftermath of the Fraterville Mine explosion.
On May 19, 1902, an explosion devastated the Fraterville Mine. The disaster killed the men and boys who were underground and became one of the defining tragedies in Tennessee mining history.
The catastrophe did not stop at the boundaries of Fraterville.
A contemporary memorial program prepared only days after the explosion shows how widely grief spread through the surrounding communities. The program called for memorial services not only at Coal Creek and Briceville churches but at Beech Grove Baptist Church and other houses of worship throughout the region.
Its burial list also recorded Fraterville victims being laid to rest at Beech Grove, including James E. McDonald, William Morgan, and Robert Price among those visible in the surviving program.
The official investigation into the disaster reached into Beech Grove’s mining history as well. Testimony preserved from miners working in the district described gas in the Beech Grove workings and compared conditions among neighboring mines.
The significance extends beyond the technical question of ventilation. Men moved among these mines. Families were connected through marriage, churches, cemeteries, work, and kinship. A disaster at Fraterville therefore belonged to the entire Coal Creek Valley.
Beech Grove was part of that world.
Mechanization Changes the Mountain
The transition remembered by Bill McGhee from mules to motors continued throughout the twentieth century.
Increasingly powerful machinery cut coal, moved it underground, carried it to the surface, processed it, and loaded it for shipment. The physical labor remained difficult and dangerous, but the scale of production changed.
By the middle of the century, Beech Grove had become important enough to appear in a detailed federal investigation of Anderson County’s coal reserves.
In 1955 the United States Bureau of Mines published Estimate of Known Recoverable Reserves and the Preparation and Carbonizing Properties of Coking Coal in Anderson County, Tennessee. Federal investigators studied the county’s major coal beds and analyzed samples from working mines.
Among them was Beech Grove.
Tables in the report identify a mine-run tipple sample from the Beech Grove mine in the Pewee coal bed. Investigators crushed and separated the coal at different sizes and densities to measure its washing characteristics and ash content.
At first glance, such tables seem far removed from human history. They are columns of measurements and percentages.
Yet they demonstrate something important. Decades after the Black Diamond operations of the 1890s, Beech Grove remained part of an active industrial coalfield. The same community that Bill McGhee remembered as a place of mule barns and carbide lamps had entered an era of federal geological analysis, mechanical preparation, and modern coal marketing.
The mine camp had changed, but coal had not left Beech Grove.
Beech Grove Coal Goes to Oak Ridge
One of the most unusual chapters in Beech Grove’s history connects this small Anderson County mining community with the enormous federal complex at Oak Ridge.
A 1963 Tennessee Court of Appeals decision, Southern Coal and Coke Company v. Beech Grove Mining Company, preserved extraordinary details about mining operations during the late 1950s.
In May 1958, Union Carbide Nuclear Company sought bids for coal to supply United States Atomic Energy Commission facilities at Oak Ridge. Southern Coal and Coke Company submitted a bid as sales agent, identifying Beech Grove Mining Company as the producer.
The resulting purchase order was worth approximately $263,840, a substantial coal contract for the period.
For several months, Beech Grove Mining Company supplied the contract through strip mining. Then the accessible strip coal ran out.
In July 1959, according to the court, the company had to turn to more expensive underground mining to obtain suitable coal.
That transition created a labor dispute.
The federal contract required compliance with minimum-wage provisions of the Walsh-Healey Public Contracts Act. The court found that miners working in the deep mines were paid below the required federal rate. The Department of Labor eventually demanded damages, and Southern Coal and Coke paid $34,729.47 before seeking reimbursement from Beech Grove Mining Company.
The Tennessee Court of Appeals concluded that Beech Grove Mining Company, as the coal producer responsible for paying the miners, should bear the cost.
The case offers an unusually detailed window into mid-century Appalachian coal mining. It connects a small mountain mine with federal energy installations at Oak Ridge while also showing how questions of wages, labor law, production costs, and changing mining methods continued to shape the lives of coal miners.
Nearly seventy years after industrial mining first spread through the Coal Creek Valley, Beech Grove coal was helping supply one of the most technologically important federal installations in America.
Coal Mining Survives Into the 1990s
Beech Grove’s mining history did not end with the old camp, Black Diamond, or the mid-century mines.
Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration records show industrial mining continuing around the community into the 1990s.
On August 24, 1995, a massive roof fall occurred at Mine No. 7 of the Tennessee Coal Company in Beech Grove. The official MSHA investigation reported that the mine had originally opened as Cross Mountain Coal’s Mine No. 7 on May 12, 1994, before being acquired the following year.
Thirty-nine miners worked there, thirty-five of them underground. The mine produced approximately 450 tons of coal per day using a continuous mining machine and a mobile bridge haulage system.
Coal traveled by conveyor to the surface and was then trucked roughly four miles to the Beech Grove Processing Plant. After cleaning, it was shipped by railroad to the Tennessee Valley Authority for electric-power generation.
The same report records the danger that remained underground despite a century of technological advancement.
Shortly before noon on August 24, miner James Jenkins finished his lunch break and stood to return to work. Without warning, an enormous section of mine roof collapsed. MSHA measured the fallen section at roughly twenty-nine feet long, twenty-one feet wide, and eighty inches thick.
Jenkins was trapped beneath it and killed.
The machinery had changed dramatically since Bill McGhee watched carbide lights cross the mountains, but the fundamental danger of the mountain overhead remained.
The End of an Industrial Era
By the closing decades of the twentieth century, mining around Beech Grove was increasingly defined not only by production but by reclamation and the environmental legacy of more than a century of coal extraction.
The Coal Creek Watershed Foundation identifies the Beech Grove slurry impoundment as one remnant of that later period. According to the foundation’s local history, waste removed during coal processing after passage of the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was deposited there until local mining operations ceased in 1997.
The same historical project identifies surviving Beech Grove mine-camp houses as remnants of the community’s early twentieth-century boom and remembers Beech Grove Falls as a recreation destination. Before automobiles became common, families reportedly walked along the railroad tracks to picnic near the falls.
That image offers a fitting counterpoint to the industrial record.
The railroad that carried coal away from the mountain also became a path families followed on Sunday afternoons.
The creek that ran beside machinery and mine buildings led toward a waterfall.
The community built around extraction became home.
What Remains of Beech Grove
Beech Grove never became a large city, and that is precisely why its history matters.
Thousands of Appalachian places followed similar trajectories. They appeared in government records when someone found coal beneath them. They grew when a railroad or mining company arrived. Houses rose along the creek. Churches, stores, schools, ball fields, and gathering places followed. Then machinery improved, seams played out, corporations reorganized, mines closed, railroads disappeared, and the communities gradually became quieter.
Official maps still preserve the Beech Grove name. Geographic databases remember Better Chance. Court decisions preserve disputes between coal companies. Federal laboratory tables preserve the composition of coal taken from beneath the mountain. Mine inspectors recorded the ventilation systems underground. MSHA recorded the dimensions of the roof that killed a miner in 1995.
Oral history preserves something different.
It remembers a boy watching miners’ lights crossing the mountains before daylight. It remembers the mule barn, the commissary, the hotel dining room, the baseball team, the brass band, the movie theater, church on Sunday, and a miner working his garden by carbide light after spending the day underground.
Those records belong together.
Why Beech Grove Matters
The history of Beech Grove offers a remarkably complete view of the Appalachian coal era because its documentary trail stretches across so much of that history.
The nineteenth-century records show the arrival of industrial mining and Black Diamond. The early twentieth-century memories show the growth of a true mine camp and the community created around it. The Fraterville records connect Beech Grove to the shared tragedies of the Coal Creek Valley. Federal studies from the 1950s demonstrate that its coal remained commercially important generations later. A Tennessee court case ties Beech Grove miners directly to the atomic-age economy of Oak Ridge. Finally, a federal accident investigation shows coal still being mined, processed, and shipped through Beech Grove near the end of the twentieth century.
Few places illustrate more clearly that Appalachian coal history was never just the history of companies or seams.
It was the history of communities.
For the people of Beech Grove, coal shaped where houses stood, when men woke for work, which roads and railroads crossed the valley, how families earned money, and even where people spent their Sunday afternoons. Long after most of the machinery stopped, that history remained written into the mountains, cemeteries, roads, old mine sites, and memories of the people who called the valley home.
Beech Grove may occupy only a small place on the map of Anderson County, but its history belongs to the much larger story of industrial Appalachia.
