Appalachian Community Histories – Bottom Creek, McDowell County: Coal, the 1911 Mine Explosion, and the Mines at Vivian
Bottom Creek is easy to pass without realizing how much history lies beneath the narrow valley. The community sits near Vivian along the old Norfolk and Western Railway corridor east of Welch, where the mountains crowd close to Elkhorn Creek and leave little level ground between the water, railroad, road, and hillsides.
Historical records often identify the Bottom Creek mines as being at Vivian rather than in a separate community called Bottom Creek. A federal investigation placed the main mine seven miles east of Welch, about one-half mile west of East Vivian, directly beside the main line of the Norfolk and Western Railway. The later McDowell County Coal Heritage Survey likewise described Vivian as a steep mountain community along Elkhorn Creek where several coal companies operated, including the Bottom Creek Coal and Coke Company.
The history of Bottom Creek is the history of industrial expansion into the Pocahontas coalfield, immigrant and Black labor, dangerous underground work, railroad transportation, and one of McDowell County’s deadliest mine explosions.
The Railroad and the Pocahontas Coalfield
Vivian dated from the early 1890s, when the Norfolk and Western Railway was extending its Pocahontas Division through the Elkhorn Valley. By that time, the railroad had reached Kimball, approximately one mile west of Vivian. The rails opened the surrounding mountains to large-scale commercial coal production and connected the mines of McDowell County with distant industrial markets.
The federal report on the Bottom Creek disaster stated that Bottom Creek No. 1 was opened in 1892 by William Spencer of Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The Bottom Creek Coal and Coke Company had worked the Crozier Land Association tract since 1896. The company’s selling agents were located in Philadelphia, revealing the direct connection between a remote McDowell County hollow and eastern financial and industrial interests.
Bottom Creek No. 1 worked the Pocahontas No. 3 seam. The federal investigators measured the coal at approximately five and one-half to more than six feet thick, with an average thickness of almost five feet ten inches. A bony parting ran through the seam, while unstable draw slate formed part of the immediate roof. The mine opening stood only about fifteen feet above the creek, making it convenient to move coal from the mountain to the surface plant and railroad.
The coal was screened at the mine, and smaller coal was once burned in beehive coke ovens. This linked Bottom Creek not only to household and railroad fuel markets, but also to the industrial processes that required coke for iron and steel production.
Inside Bottom Creek No. 1
By 1911, Bottom Creek No. 1 was an extensive underground operation. Its main entries reached deep into the mountain, and the eleventh left section where the disaster occurred was approximately two and one-quarter miles from the mine entrance.
Coal was removed through a combination of machine cutting and hand labor. Electric equipment operated alongside mules, locomotives, pumps, fans, and haulage systems. The main haulage roads were illuminated by electric lights powered from trolley wires, but miners continued to carry open lamps that burned lard oil.
Ventilation came from a sixteen-foot Capell fan driven by a steam engine. The company used exhaust steam to humidify the intake air and sprinkling cars to moisten dusty sections of the mine. The system had been operating for about two years before the explosion.
Even with this equipment, Bottom Creek was a gaseous mine. Methane could collect in abandoned rooms, roof cavities, and poorly ventilated spaces. The danger was especially severe when open flames were permitted underground.
The mine’s layout also reflected the constant search for greater production. Entries were driven toward the property boundary, rooms were opened from them, and coal pillars were eventually removed as miners retreated. This method could recover more coal, but it also required careful control of ventilation, roof conditions, abandoned workings, and gas.
November 18, 1911
On Saturday morning, November 18, 1911, Bottom Creek’s fire bosses entered the mine at 3:00 a.m. They inspected the active workings and returned outside around 6:00. Their record book reported that no gas had been found.
Between 6:30 and 7:00, approximately 150 men entered the mine for the day’s work. Five engineers employed by the Crozier Land Company entered shortly afterward. They had spent the previous two days measuring other sections and planned to complete their survey of the eleventh and twelfth entries.
The engineers were familiar with surveying mines, but the federal investigation found that the other mines they normally entered were not considered gaseous. They were therefore less accustomed to the precautions required inside Bottom Creek.
Rooms No. 6 and No. 7 off the eleventh entry had been driven approximately 400 feet and temporarily abandoned about two months earlier. When the track was removed from No. 7, an entry boss placed a board across its mouth with the word “STOP” written on it. A ventilation check between the two rooms had been destroyed about two weeks before the explosion and had not been replaced.
The engineers worked backward from the face of the entry until they reached No. 7 room. Two entered the room. A note keeper stepped several feet inside, another engineer remained near the switch, and Alec Williams moved along the entry carrying the transit.
At approximately 11:00 a.m., Williams heard a sound that he described to investigators as a puff. He turned and saw flame rushing from No. 7 room.
Williams dropped the transit and threw his coat around his head. The flame struck him, knocked him down, and then passed back over him. He lost consciousness and later awoke while rescuers were carrying him from the mine. He suffered serious burns to his face, hands, and arms, but survived.
Four of the five engineers died.
Eighteen Men Lost Underground
The force of the explosion traveled along the eleventh entry. An air door was blown open, cars were disturbed, roof material fell, and several workers were burned or overcome by poisonous gases.
Entry boss Andy Gotchen and fire boss G. E. Wilson were positioned far enough from the ignition point to survive the initial blast. They sent word to the outside and began moving toward the affected section. The mine office contacted neighboring operations for help.
Gotchen, Wilson, and other men succeeded in bringing out five injured workers. Two more escaped without assistance. Rescue parties entered the eleventh air course, repairing damaged ventilation stoppings with brattice cloth as they advanced.
Sixteen bodies were recovered during the afternoon. The final two were found near No. 7 room around midnight, trapped behind heavy roof falls. The explosion killed eighteen men, while seven men were brought out alive.
The official West Virginia mine disaster list records the Bottom Creek explosion as occurring on November 18, 1911, at the Bottom Creek Coal and Coke Company mine in Vivian. It lists eighteen victims.
The loss was devastating, but the explosion did not affect the entire mine. Investigators determined that the blast remained largely confined to the eleventh entry and its adjoining rooms. This prevented the disaster from killing many more of the approximately 150 men who had entered the mine that morning.
Survivors in the Darkness
The federal report preserved the experiences of several survivors.
Frank Galino, identified in the investigation as an Austrian worker, was approximately 100 feet from the face of the eleventh entry when the explosion occurred. He heard the blast and initially believed that someone had fired a heavy shot. His lamp went out, and the other lights around him soon failed as well.
Galino started toward the entrance, but then remembered his dinner bucket. He returned through the darkness, searched until he found it, and again began making his way out. He passed the bodies of men who had fallen along the entry before finally reaching safety.
Another survivor, a Black miner named Pryor, had worked at Bottom Creek for approximately eight years. He was loading a car in No. 5 room when the explosion threw the car from the track and knocked him down. He crawled along the entry until he reached a roof fall, where he lost consciousness. Gotchen found him and carried him toward safety.
Harvey Spencer, a trapper, suffered a dislocated shoulder and burns. Driver Sam Bailey was badly burned and struck by flying material. Their accounts reveal that survival often depended on a worker’s exact position, the direction of the flame, nearby roof falls, and whether fresh air reached a particular section.
What Caused the Bottom Creek Explosion
The coroner’s jury concluded that gas had accumulated in abandoned No. 7 room and was ignited by an open lamp carried by a member of the engineering party.
Federal investigators reached a similar conclusion. They found evidence showing that the explosion originated in No. 7 room, where the engineers had been conducting their survey. Investigators detected gas feeders and measured methane in the affected section after the disaster.
The investigators did not place responsibility on a single action alone. Their report criticized the failure to inspect inactive rooms near working places carefully, the lack of adequate danger signals, the unrepaired ventilation check, and the decision to allow engineers unfamiliar with gaseous mines to travel without an experienced official.
Most importantly, the engineers had been permitted to carry open lamps into an area where gas could accumulate.
The investigation emphasized that even a relatively small pocket of methane could be deadly. Five men died from burns or the physical force of the explosion. Thirteen died from afterdamp, the poisonous mixture of gases left after an underground explosion.
The federal report also noted that Bottom Creek lacked breathing equipment and a trained rescue team. Investigators believed that such resources might have saved additional lives.
The report’s discussion of men attempting to escape through afterdamp was written with the confidence of hindsight. Underground workers faced darkness, falling slate, extinguished lamps, heat, smoke, confusion, and no certain knowledge of where breathable air remained. Their decisions were made within seconds under conditions few people outside a mine could fully understand.
Coal Dust and a Disaster That Could Have Been Worse
Bottom Creek No. 1 was dry and dusty enough to create another serious danger. Coal dust can carry an explosion through underground workings, turning a localized methane ignition into a much larger catastrophe.
Investigators found dust on the roof, ribs, and floor, but they did not find the coked or charred material that would indicate the coal dust had propagated the Bottom Creek explosion. The blast remained local despite the dust present in the section.
Mine officials believed that the exhaust-steam humidification system helped prevent the flame from spreading. Investigators were more cautious, but they acknowledged that the wet walls and floor may have cooled the flame enough to limit its travel.
This distinction mattered enormously. If the dust had carried the explosion into the main entries, the death toll could have reached far beyond eighteen.
Rebuilding and Modernizing Bottom Creek
The disaster did not end mining at Bottom Creek.
By the state reporting period covering 1914 and 1915, Bottom Creek No. 1 was again described as a large and well-developed operation. It worked a six-foot section of the Pocahontas No. 3 seam and used both machine mining and pick work.
The mine had undergone extensive improvements. Crews drove additional air courses and removed hundreds of cars of refuse and debris from the haulage roads. The state inspector reported that the mine generated gas but said it was being managed at the time of his inspections. Solid shooting was prohibited, permissible explosives were used in pillar work, and clay was used for tamping.
The old coke ovens had been abandoned, but a new tipple had been erected with a rated capacity of 3,000 tons per day. Mules and smaller gathering locomotives brought coal to collection points. Two fifteen-ton electric locomotives then hauled it to the tipple.
Despite this modern equipment, the mine was producing only about 600 tons per day during an economic depression. The state report said the operation was running at approximately half of its normal output. Company production for the reporting period totaled 164,517 tons.
The listed company officials included general manager S. W. Patterson, secretary G. S. Patterson, superintendent John Maurice, foreman A. W. Greer, fire boss G. E. Wilson, night foreman Tony Lustris, and entry boss John Rippy.
Bottom Creek No. 2
Bottom Creek No. 2 was located about nine and one-half miles east of Welch along the Norfolk and Western main line. It also worked the Pocahontas No. 3 seam, which measured approximately five and one-half feet thick at that location.
Unlike the mixed machine and pick work at No. 1, No. 2 was described as a machine mine. Its workings were divided into panels, coal was gathered by mules, and electric locomotives transported the coal toward the surface.
The mine used a six-foot disc fan producing approximately 40,000 cubic feet of air per minute. Because parts of the operation were dry, the inspector recommended salt for humidification and permissible powder for pillar work. Crews were cleaning and widening air courses, while plans were being made to send the mine’s coal to the new No. 1 tipple.
The inspector described the new Bottom Creek tipple as one of the most modern in West Virginia. Yet No. 2, like No. 1, was working only about half time. The contrast captured an enduring reality of coalfield life. A company could possess expensive machinery, electric locomotives, modern preparation equipment, and enormous productive capacity while miners still faced layoffs and shortened work caused by distant market conditions.
Herman Palovney and the Everyday Dangers of Mining
Explosions attracted newspaper headlines, state investigations, and federal reports, but most mining deaths occurred one worker at a time.
On September 18, 1914, Herman Palovney was working as a track helper on No. 10 entry in Bottom Creek No. 1. The state mine report identified him as Russian, one of the many eastern and southern European immigrants who found employment in the southern West Virginia coalfields.
Palovney was caught by a fall of slate. He survived the initial accident but died from his injuries the following day.
His death illustrates the constant threat posed by the mine roof. Bottom Creek’s immediate roof included unstable draw slate that could separate and fall with little warning. Miners, loaders, track workers, timbermen, and supervisors all spent their shifts beneath thousands of tons of rock held in place by pillars, timbers, and careful judgment.
Palovney’s brief entry in the annual report is also a reminder of how immigrant lives appear in official records. Government reports frequently identified workers by nationality, including Russian, Austrian, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, and other origins. These classifications were sometimes imprecise, but collectively they reveal the international labor force that built McDowell County’s coal industry.
Black miners were also part of the Bottom Creek workforce. Pryor’s testimony after the 1911 explosion shows that he had already worked at the mine for eight years. Bottom Creek was therefore not simply a company operation. It was a workplace where white Appalachians, Black workers, and European immigrants labored together underground, even while the coalfield communities above them remained divided by race, ethnicity, occupation, and company status.
Bottom Creek and Vivian
Bottom Creek cannot be separated neatly from Vivian.
The mines used Vivian as their post office address. The Norfolk and Western served the Bottom Creek operation through the same narrow Elkhorn Valley corridor that supported Peerless Coal and Coke Company, Tidewater Coal and Coke Company, and neighboring mines.
The modern Coal Heritage Survey dates Vivian to 1892 and identifies Bottom Creek as one of several companies operating in the vicinity. It describes the community as lying along Elkhorn Creek and the former Norfolk and Western line, surrounded by steep mountainous terrain.
Historical postcards and railroad photographs preserve images of the Bottom Creek tipple, crusher, railroad cars, and industrial buildings. These photographs show how thoroughly the company occupied the valley floor. The preparation plant stood beside the tracks while mine openings and tramways connected the underground workings to the surface.
The landscape left little room for separating industry from daily life. Trains, coal dust, machinery, company buildings, homes, creeks, and roads existed almost on top of one another. Children growing up near Bottom Creek would have seen the tipple and railroad as part of the ordinary landscape, while families measured time through shift whistles, train movements, accidents, layoffs, and paydays.
Remembering the Bottom Creek Dead
The Bottom Creek explosion was not the largest mine disaster in West Virginia history, nor even the largest in McDowell County. Its eighteen victims can easily disappear among the much larger casualty totals associated with Monongah, Eccles, Layland, Bartley, and other disasters.
Yet the federal investigation makes Bottom Creek unusually well documented.
It records the location of the flame, the damaged ventilation controls, the movements of the engineering party, the actions of rescuers, the injuries of survivors, the air measurements, the mine’s equipment, and the conditions found underground. It allows the story to be reconstructed almost minute by minute.
It also preserves small human details. A survivor wrapped a coat around his head. Another crawled until he collapsed. One man returned for his dinner bucket. Rescuers repaired ventilation curtains as they advanced. Neighboring mines sent men to help. Families waited outside while sixteen bodies were carried out during the afternoon and two more were recovered near midnight.
Those details turn a number in a disaster table into a community tragedy.
Why Bottom Creek Matters
Bottom Creek represents the speed with which industrial coal mining transformed McDowell County.
Within a few years of the railroad’s arrival, an isolated mountain tract became an extensive underground operation connected to Philadelphia selling agents and national markets. Electric locomotives traveled through the mine, coal passed through a massive tipple, and Norfolk and Western trains carried the product away.
The wealth moved outward. The danger remained in the hollow.
The explosion of November 18, 1911, showed how a damaged ventilation control, an abandoned room, accumulated methane, open lamps, and inadequate supervision could combine into catastrophe. The later modernization of the operation showed that technology alone could not remove the dangers of roof falls, gas, dust, machinery, or unstable employment.
Today, the Bottom Creek name survives in maps, mine reports, archival photographs, company records, and the official list of West Virginia mine disasters. The source survey prepared for this article brings together many of those surviving records and identifies further collections that may preserve corporate ledgers, maps, photographs, land transactions, and correspondence.
Bottom Creek’s history belongs to more than one company or one disaster. It belongs to the engineers who entered No. 7 room, the miners who worked miles inside the mountain, the immigrant track helper killed by falling slate, the Black miner carried from the darkness, the rescuers who advanced through damaged airways, and the families who made lives beside the railroad at Vivian.
Their history remains beneath the hills, even where the tipples, coke ovens, and mine buildings have disappeared.
