Appalachian Community Histories – East Kermit, Mingo County: Coal, Floods, and Life Along the Tug Fork
East Kermit occupies one of those narrow pieces of Appalachian ground where nearly every part of the landscape has shaped the lives of the people who settled there. The Tug Fork curves around the community, steep hills rise beyond the river bottom, and U.S. Route 52 follows the small corridor available between water and mountain.
The name appears on official maps, road records, school documents, property descriptions, and government reports. Yet East Kermit was never incorporated as a town of its own. It remained closely tied to neighboring Kermit, and many documents concerning its residents were filed simply under Kermit, the Kermit District, Burning Creek, or Mingo County.
That has made East Kermit easy to overlook. It was real enough to appear on federal maps and in state legislation, but not independent enough to produce a separate municipal archive. Its story must therefore be reconstructed from scattered records, including census schedules, deeds, mine documents, newspapers, school maps, church listings, cemetery records, highway plans, and flood reports.
Those records reveal a community shaped by the development of the Tug Valley, the coming of the railroad, coal mining, family institutions, repeated flooding, and the long struggle to maintain basic infrastructure in a place where the river could provide life one year and carry pieces of the community away the next.
Before East Kermit Had a Name
Before the creation of Mingo County, the land around East Kermit belonged to Logan County. Mingo County was established on January 30, 1895, from the southern part of Logan County, making it the youngest of West Virginia’s fifty-five counties. The county’s creation followed a period of population and industrial growth associated with the construction of the Norfolk & Western Railway through the Tug Valley.
The official creation of the county did not mark the beginning of settlement along the Tug Fork. Families had already established farms, cabins, small clearings, mills, river crossings, and burial grounds along the creeks and bottomlands. Before coal companies, graded highways, and modern bridges transformed the valley, waterways were the most dependable guides through the mountains.
Burning Creek and its branches became important geographic markers. Early deeds and census records may describe residents as living on Lower Burning Creek, Middle Burning Creek, or nearby sections of the Tug Fork rather than in East Kermit. For research before 1895, the same families and properties may be found in Logan County records instead of Mingo County files.
The landscape limited where people could build. Homes generally appeared wherever the valley widened enough to permit a house, garden, store, church, school, or small business. Families lived close to the river and creek because that was where usable land could be found, even though the same location exposed them to floods.
East Kermit grew from this older pattern of Appalachian settlement. It was not created through a single charter, company plan, or formal act. It developed gradually as families, transportation routes, industries, and community institutions filled the narrow ground beyond the incorporated town.
From Lower Burning Creek to Kermit
The history of East Kermit cannot be separated from the history of Kermit itself. The incorporated town was formerly known as Lower Burning Creek and Warfield. It was incorporated by the Mingo County Circuit Court in 1909 and named for Kermit Roosevelt, the son of President Theodore Roosevelt.
The older name Warfield reflected the community’s close connection with Warfield, Kentucky, across the Tug Fork. The river formed a state boundary, but it did not form an absolute social boundary. Families, churches, stores, railroad workers, miners, and businesses operated on both sides. Bridges and ferries tied the West Virginia and Kentucky communities together.
As Kermit became the name of the incorporated center, East Kermit identified the settlement extending beyond it along the river, highway, and railroad. The word “East” functioned less as a precise compass description than as a way of distinguishing the outlying community from the municipal center.
East Kermit never developed a separate town government. It had no independent mayor, council, charter, or post office bearing its own name. Residents could live in a place locally recognized as East Kermit while receiving mail through Kermit and appearing in public records under the broader community name.
This helps explain why searches limited to the exact words “East Kermit” produce an incomplete history. A miner might be identified as living in Kermit. A deed might describe property along Burning Creek or Route 52. A child could attend a school located in East Kermit while the school used a Kermit mailing address. A newspaper might describe an accident as occurring near Kermit even when local residents understood the location to be East Kermit.
The Railroad, the Highway, and the Shape of the Community
The railroad helped transform the Tug Valley from a collection of relatively isolated settlements into an industrial corridor. Coal, timber, equipment, mail, merchandise, and passengers could move through the valley in quantities that had once been impossible.
The 1963 United States Geological Survey map of the Kermit quadrangle provides one of the clearest historical views of East Kermit. The map places the community inside a broad bend of the Tug Fork, south of incorporated Kermit. U.S. Route 52 and the railroad follow the same restricted corridor through the valley. Houses and other structures appear wherever the river bottom provides enough room for construction.
The map shows how little space separated transportation, industry, and domestic life. Trains passed close to homes. The highway followed the railroad and river. Creeks emerged from narrow hollows and crossed the transportation corridor before entering the Tug Fork. Houses stood on small benches, hillsides, and strips of bottomland.
That physical arrangement influenced daily life. The railroad connected East Kermit to the larger coal economy, but it also divided parts of the community and created dangerous crossings. Route 52 gave residents access to Williamson, Wayne County, and communities farther north, but road construction and widening altered older properties and travel patterns.
The corridor remained important long after the coalfield railroad boom. In 2017, the West Virginia Legislature described a bridge on U.S. Route 52 between Kermit and East Kermit. Known locally as the Upper Burning Creek Bridge, it carried the highway over Upper Burning Creek and the Norfolk Southern railroad. The resolution’s wording provides an official description of East Kermit as a recognizable place connected to, but distinct from, the incorporated town.
A Place Hidden in the Records
East Kermit’s lack of incorporation did not make it insignificant. It simply meant that its history was recorded differently.
Federal census takers did not consistently tabulate East Kermit as an independent population center. To identify its residents, researchers must often follow enumeration district maps, roads, creeks, household order, occupations, and neighboring families. A household might be placed under the Kermit District, Harvey District, Warfield District, or another political division depending on the year.
Property records create similar problems. Deeds may identify a tract by a creek, family boundary, railroad right of way, mineral grant, or distance from a familiar landmark. The same land might later be described as Route 52, East Kermit, even though an earlier deed never used the community name.
Cemeteries provide another form of evidence. Murphy Cemetery and other family burial grounds around East Kermit connect the landscape to generations of local families. Death certificates, obituaries, grave inscriptions, church records, and land deeds can help determine who lived in the community when ordinary histories remain silent.
The scattered nature of the evidence is itself part of East Kermit’s story. Many Appalachian communities existed through local recognition rather than legal boundaries. People knew where East Kermit began because they knew the families, roads, churches, schools, hollows, stores, and gathering places. The official map eventually acknowledged what residents already understood.
Coal and Burning Springs
Coal mining became one of the defining forces in the greater Kermit and Burning Creek area. Mines opened in the hills, railroad sidings served industrial properties, and generations of residents entered occupations connected to coal extraction and transportation.
Mining offered wages in a region where other employment opportunities were limited. It also exposed workers and their families to dangerous conditions underground, economic instability, injury, disease, and sudden disaster.
The Burning Springs Collieries operation stood immediately above Kermit, several hundred yards up the hollow from U.S. Route 52. By the middle of the twentieth century, the mine employed approximately seventy-five men inside and outside its workings. Its location placed the mine within the everyday world of Kermit, East Kermit, and Burning Creek residents.
Men from the surrounding communities traveled into the mountain for their shifts while families waited in homes along the highway, river, and creeks. The mine whistle, machinery, rail cars, trucks, and movement of workers became part of the ordinary sound and rhythm of the valley.
That ordinary rhythm ended violently on January 18, 1951.
The Burning Springs Mine Disaster
A gas explosion tore through part of the Burning Springs Collieries mine during the afternoon of January 18, 1951. Approximately twenty-five miners were working in two sections when the explosion struck No. 9 hallway, about 4,000 feet from the drift mouth. Eleven men were killed, and two others were injured.
The dead were Tom Moore Sr., Tom Moore Jr., Charlie Sparks, Proctor Sparks, Conrad Dalton, Delbert Dalton, Walter Johnson, Sherman Fields, Charlie Porter, Lashley Mounts, and John Chafin.
The names revealed the family nature of coalfield labor. A father and son died together. Another father and son were lost in the same explosion. Two brothers died with their brother-in-law. The disaster did not strike eleven isolated workers. It struck families connected through blood, marriage, work, church, and neighborhood.
Mine superintendent T. L. Lambert entered the damaged workings with rescue crews and remained underground until all the bodies had been recovered. The first bodies were brought out during the afternoon, but hours passed before every victim was located. Contemporary reporting stated that the men appeared to have died instantly from the force of the explosion.
Outside the mine, relatives, workers, reporters, law officers, ambulance crews, and local residents gathered near the mouth of the hollow. Authorities attempted to hold the crowd back along U.S. Route 52 while rescue operations continued.
Among the people watching was Bob Johnson of East Kermit. He normally worked in the same section where the explosion occurred, but he had taken the day off following the death of his sister. He stood near the mine alive, grieving for the men who had taken the shift he narrowly missed.
His presence creates one of the clearest direct connections between East Kermit and the disaster. The story was not merely about an industrial operation somewhere near town. It involved East Kermit workers, their neighbors, and the families who waited along the highway for news.
The official West Virginia mine disaster record identifies the event as a gas explosion at the Burning Springs Collieries operation in Kermit and confirms the death toll of eleven. The tragedy remains one of the most consequential events in the history of the Kermit and East Kermit area.
Schools, Churches, and the East Kermit Ballfield
Coal and transportation explain part of East Kermit’s development, but community life was built around institutions that rarely receive the same attention as mines and railroads.
Church directories, newspaper notices, funeral records, and local references identify congregations associated with East Kermit, including the East Kermit Church of God, East Kermit Freewill Baptist Church, and Faith Church of God. Their surviving records may contain names, marriages, baptisms, funerals, revivals, homecomings, photographs, and community events that never appeared in county histories.
Schools served a similar purpose. They educated children, hosted ball games, provided meeting places, and became landmarks by which residents described the surrounding community.
A 2005 map prepared by the West Virginia GIS Technical Center and using information from the West Virginia Department of Education placed the public Kermit Area School in East Kermit. The school served kindergarten through eighth grade and stood near Route 52 within the bend of the Tug Fork. Although it carried a Kermit mailing address, the map clearly identified its location in East Kermit.
The East Kermit ballfield also became a recognized community space. A 2017 legislative resolution honoring Johnny O’Dell Linville credited him with helping create the baseball field at East Kermit. Linville reportedly worked the public address system for hours and announced the names of players from the press box.
That detail may appear small beside railroad construction or a mine explosion, but it says much about how communities endure. A ballfield gave children and families a place to gather. Games created memories tied specifically to East Kermit. The press box, the announced names, and the people sitting together around the field strengthened an identity that did not depend upon a municipal charter.
Floodwater Along the Tug Fork
The Tug Fork made settlement and industry possible, but it also placed East Kermit in constant danger.
The community’s position inside a river bend left houses, businesses, transportation routes, and utility lines exposed whenever the Tug Fork rose. Water descending from the mountains entered creeks rapidly and then moved into a river channel bordered by narrow valleys and steep slopes.
The April 1977 flood became one of the defining disasters in Tug Valley history. Heavy rainfall across the headwaters of the Cumberland and Big Sandy river systems produced record flooding along the Tug Fork. United States Geological Survey investigations described the 1977 peak at Kermit as enormous compared with other years in the historical record.
Photographs from Kermit show water covering streets and reaching buildings near the railroad. Cars sat partly submerged while residents watched from higher ground. East Kermit’s position along the same river, highway, and railroad corridor meant that it shared the danger faced throughout the community.
Flooding did more than damage individual homes. It affected roads, bridges, schools, water service, sewer lines, businesses, and the physical arrangement of the settlement. Buildings could be repaired, elevated, acquired, or demolished. Families sometimes returned to the same properties because there was little safe, level land available elsewhere.
The history of East Kermit therefore includes repeated cycles of damage and rebuilding. The river receded, mud was removed, roads reopened, and people resumed their lives. Yet each flood left changes in the landscape and in the memories of those who lived through it.
The Waterline Washed Away
One of the clearest modern examples of East Kermit’s vulnerability involved its water supply.
According to a federal environmental information document prepared for the Town of Kermit, a 2015 flood washed away the principal waterline serving East Kermit. Approximately 1,000 feet of line was lost, leaving several homes and businesses without potable water. Emergency lines were installed to connect the affected area to the Mingo County Public Service District.
For years afterward, Kermit purchased water in bulk from the public service district to supply its East Kermit customers. The arrangement provided necessary service, but it also increased operating costs and left the town dependent upon an outside connection.
Plans were eventually developed to install approximately 3,600 feet of new eight-inch waterline and reconnect East Kermit to Kermit’s distribution system. The project also involved extensive rehabilitation of the town’s aging water treatment plant, which draws its raw water from the Tug Fork. Federal and state funding supported the work.
In June 2025, households in East Kermit began receiving water drawn and treated by Kermit again for the first time in approximately a decade. The restoration represented more than the completion of an infrastructure project. It closed a chapter that had begun when floodwater physically severed East Kermit from the municipal system.
The episode summarized much of the community’s history. Geography shaped settlement. Water sustained the town. Floodwater destroyed essential infrastructure. Residents adapted through an emergency connection. Years of planning and funding were required to restore what the river had taken.
Why East Kermit Matters
East Kermit represents hundreds of Appalachian communities whose names appear on maps but rarely in conventional histories.
It was not incorporated, and it did not maintain a separate municipal archive. Its residents shared institutions, industries, roads, disasters, and public services with neighboring Kermit. As a result, East Kermit can disappear when historians rely only on town charters, census totals, or published county histories.
The official record nevertheless confirms its identity. The United States Geological Survey labeled East Kermit on the Kermit quadrangle. The West Virginia Legislature described a bridge between Kermit and East Kermit. State education records placed the Kermit Area School there. Federal environmental documents discussed the community’s water service. Newspapers identified East Kermit residents during moments of tragedy.
Together, these sources reveal a community formed along one of the Tug Fork’s bends and sustained by families who lived between river, railroad, highway, and mountain.
East Kermit’s story includes the coal miners who entered the Burning Springs workings, the relatives who waited outside after the 1951 explosion, the children who attended school beside Route 52, the churches that marked births and deaths, the players whose names echoed from the ballfield press box, and the households that waited a decade for their local water connection to be restored.
It is a history of endurance rather than incorporation. East Kermit survived without the formal boundaries that usually define a town. Its borders were understood through memory, landscape, and community life.
Preserving that history requires looking beyond the most obvious records. It requires following the creeks, examining maps, comparing census households, reading old newspapers, tracing deeds, visiting cemeteries, and listening to people who remember where families lived before floods, road projects, mining changes, and demolition altered the valley.
East Kermit may occupy only a narrow piece of ground along the Tug Fork, but its history reflects the larger experience of the Appalachian coalfields. It is a place where transportation brought opportunity, mining brought wages and tragedy, the river brought both survival and destruction, and community institutions gave residents a lasting sense of home.
